This year’s Arts Cube Oirase exhibition is Kuniya Oyamada’s coordinates, which follows a first exhibition mark the boundaries and will prominently feature works from his series PLANET.
After graduating from university, Oyamada boarded a passenger ship and set out to photograph famous tourist spots around the world, circumnavigating the globe a total of five times. He began to create artworks that represent the incongruity he felt towards photography and the media after a deep observation of the uncertainty within time and space. Since 2010, he has been active in his home community of Towada.
coordinates is an experiment of a spatial approach that overlays line shapes similar to letters and pictures over top of Oyamada’s photographs.
The numbers in each artwork’s title are the coordinates of abandoned buildings near the hotel where he took the photographs. You can see more information on the ruins themselves if you search these coordinates on Google Maps.
