Berlin-Based Interdisciplinary Artist Taninaka Yuske’s First Museum Solo Exhibition
Towada Art Center will hold a solo exhibition of the artist Taninaka Yuske from December 7, 2024, to March 23, 2025. Based in Berlin, Taninaka’s interdisciplinary sculpture, dance, and performance practice explores his interest in how the human body acts on or is acted upon as a subject or medium by objects, environments, and other bodies. Marking his first solo show in an art museum, this exhibition features a new installation about the differences that become apparent when universal substances act on the body, a recurrent theme in Taninaka’s recent practice. How do universal forces and substances like gravity and air act differently on bodies conventionally categorized as “disabled” and “able”? How are social structures created through such differences? And how is it possible for us to respond to those structures? During the exhibition, Taninaka will hold performances inside the installation. In addition, the exhibition will include other new works made with new materials from an ongoing body sculpture series by Taninaka, and drawings he created for the new works. In this way, the exhibition will offer a comprehensive showcase of this artist’s highly distinctive practice.
